Tom drums are an essential part of any drum kit. They can differ in size, ranging from 6" in diameter all the way up to 20". Typically used for drum fills in between a main drum beat, the toms deliver a different tonal sound compared to the higher-pitched tonality of the snare drum and the lower tones of the kick drum.
Tom drums are typically constructed from high-quality woods such as maple, poplar, and mahogany, with each material delivering unique tonal characteristics. Some toms are made from one type of wood, whereas some toms have hybrid shells. These shells are made up of a combination of different types of wood ply to create a hybrid of tonal qualities.
There are two main types of tom drums, the first being a standard tom drum with a resonant and batter head. The second type of tom drum is a concert tom; which typically only features a batter head.
Having a big tom setup is incredibly popular and can make your kit look the part. Players renowned for having big tom setups include the likes of Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy, and Terry Bozzio.

The name "tom drum" is thought to have been taken from the Sinhala language of Sri Lanka and Chinese culture, which features a gong-like instrument called a tam-tam. Toms are thought to be visually based on the Thammattama drum, which is used in Buddhist rituals.
The three toms are a high tom, mid tom, and floor tom. All of these drums feature on a standard drum kit, although there is no set amount of toms that should feature on a kit. Each of these drums projects different tones and sizes to match their respective names.
