Premium preamplifier included
When designing the RS100, SubZero only consider the highest quality components. That’s why the first path in the signal chain features a Studio-grade, discrete mic preamp. This preamp is exceptional. It provides you with up to +60dB in gain, accommodating to most low-output microphones.
What’s more, the inclusion of phantom power (48V) allows you to easily integrate condenser microphones into your set-up. Want to record direct feeds of bass, guitars and keyboards? No problem! Press the sensitivity switch to flick between line and microphone inputs. Should you be recording multi-mic’d set-ups then the polarity button will prove useful. This allows you to instantly assess the phase relationship between both microphones to ensure maximum signal integrity.
Gate your best drum sounds yet
The gate / expander function is a useful tool to have at your disposal. This can be a real life-saver for live sound engineers who may not have time to adjust less-than-ideal microphone placement. For example, the gate allows you to dramatically reduce bleed from other instruments on your kick and snare tracks. The use of a gate allows you to isolate each individual transient for maximum impact.
Thanks to the wide range of controls you’ll be able to determine the perfect release and threshold to make it sound as natural as possible (or not!)
The gate is incredibly versatile. Not only can this be used as a quick-fix, you can also embrace it as an artistic effect. With this you’ll be able to achieve that iconic gated snare sound that dominated the ‘80s. The ability to do so much out of-the-box allows you to put less strain on your computer, reducing the risk of latency. Get the sound right at source with the RS100!
Maximum control
Whether its for levelling transient peaks, or adding excitement. Compression plays a major part in the way in which we record music in the modern day. Use the in-built VCA compressor to take control of the dynamic range of your signal.
With "ratios" ranging from subtle (1:1-4:1) to extreme (6:1-∞), you'll be able to determine the exact amount your signal is reduced by. Adjust the "threshold" to determine the point at which the compressor engages. You have the control to adjust the "attack", manipulating the time it takes for the compressor to "clamp down" on peaks, and "release", giving you control over the time taken to restore the signal to pre-compression levels. At a glance, you'll be able to tell the exact level of gain reduction via the handy 12-segment LED meter.
Instruments with excessive low-end energy can often trigger compressors. That's why the RS100 features a high-pass-filter in the side-chain path. Engage this on your mix and drum bus for sensible compression levels, without the risk of introducing any "pumping" effect. The inclusion of a side-chain also allows you to create clarity in particularly dense mixes. Add impact to your low-end by side-chaining the kick drum to the bass guitar. This ensures that every time the kick hits, the bass ducks perfectly!
De-ess to impress
De-essers are vital to achieving a great sound. Not only do they excel on vocals. They can also be useful when taming harsh overtones found in cymbals, hi-hat, synthesizers and guitars. Thanks to the dynamic nature of the de-esser, it only acts when problematic frequencies are recognised. For quick and easy results, try out the "male" and "female" register buttons. These have been specifically designed to improve and enhance the sound quality of any vocalist with minimal effort required. You'll be able to see how much de-essing is being applied via the 4-segment LED.
Sculpt your sound
Sculpt your sound from the ground-up with the four band parametric equaliser. For quick and easy results, adjust the low (80Hz) and high frequency (15kHz) shelves. This applies a "broad-stroke" touch to your source. From warm lows to detailed highs, thanks to the smooth, ultra-musical nature of this EQ, the RS100 instantly makes any musician sound better!
Should you wish to dive deeper, then the two mid-range bands have you covered. Adjust the width of the Q tip for surgical precision when addressing problematic frequencies. As with every component featured on the RS100, you'll be able to engage and disengage the equaliser to quickly A/B "before" and "after". This allows you to assess whether you're going in the right direction.
