The WA-14 features a very special 'select' switch where users can select between three different polar patterns to use with the microphone. These three patterns include cardioid, figure of eight and omnidirectional. Each polar pattern is designed to serve different purposes and environments. The cardioid polar pattern is most useful in close-miking applications and focuses on the main source of sound whilst isolating the rest such as room reflection.
Should users want to capture more than one voice on one microphone then the figure of eight pattern is most suitable. Useful in recording group performances, two to four vocalists can stand on either side of the microphone for an advanced recording setup.
Omnidirectional microphones are usually used for room miking, picking up and capturing ambient sounds or instruments place further away from the microphone. With condenser microphones commonly designed with omnidirectional configurations, this setting produces the most linear frequency response with the least amount of proximity effect.
