Supercharge your creativity with Vector-based synthesis
Aiming to change the way you think about sound design, Vecto is based around four oscillator engines and a morphing XY pad to adjust the movement between each oscillator. Comprised of several categories split into Analog (Sine, Square, Triangle, SineRez, Noise), Additive (Glass, Organ, Vocal), Spectral and seven sample menus to select between an enormous range of samples. Manipulation of these waves is supplied through Spread (unison) controls, symmetry modulation, pulse width modulation and much more.
Two modes of operation are presented, with Direct mode being a live tool that allows you to drag the movement of your pad with your mouse and Replay mode delivers preset shapes of movement for your pad to follow. Sound designers will know the importance of creating something unique that fits the sound in your head, so Vecto offers numerous ways to adjust the movement, even when in Replay mode. All of the preset shapes can be altered by changing the number of steps up to a maximum of 32, the looping can be selected to start from any one of your steps, the maximum speed can be changed and of course MIDI tempo-synced to your project and of course each step can be dragged manually within the XY pad to alter their position. As a vector-based synthesizer, Rob Papen Vecto encourages performances, letting you play in your sound design. To give maximum flexibility, the speed of the movement within your XY pad can be altered using a number of different MIDI-enabled features, such as the pitch-wheel on a conventional MIDI keyboard.
The inclusion of both Time and Space quantisation opens up new possibilities for creating rhythmical sounds that are bound by the position on the XY pad. Where typically in a vector synth, your sound will be created through a series of free movements, Vecto allows you to restrict the time and space parameters to align with the rhythm of your project. Using Time Quantise, you can select any rhythm from 1/1 to 16/1 with triplet and dotted variations as well. Space Quantise reduces the ability for your dots to move by the division of the XY grid. Opting for a larger Space Quantisation will give your dots more finite movement for subtle variations, whereas selecting a smaller quantisation will create large steps with big changes between each step.
Detailed and experimental modulation
Not limiting your creativity, every parameter imaginable within Vecto can be modulated to produce something truly special and unique. Ideal for sound designers crafting sound for silver screen productions, you can create a moving and evolving sound that changes with on-screen cues. Experiment with adjusting the pitch of an oscillator to move with space quantised XY positioning for a stepped, ladder effect that can build tension in a cinematic landscape.
Multiple performance modes
Suitable for a wide range of different performance styles, Vecto offers Monophonic, Polyphonic and Free modes to choose from. Ideal for live sound designers, the modes within Vecto allow you to cater to how the triggering of your XY movement is caused to better fit your composition and style. In polyphonic mode, each note played on your MIDI controller or keyboard gets its own movement whereas, in monophonic mode, each note played restarts the triggering of your movement. Lastly, Free mode allows the movement within your XY pad to continue playing, regardless of any new notes that are being played, this can be used in conjunction with the Loop Start function to create seemingly neverending, evolving soundscapes.
Customise your sound
Crafting a sound that's unique to you and cementing your own sonic signature is vitally important. Get heard above the noise and stand out from everyone else. Doing this with Vecto is easy.
Much more than vector synthesis
A staple of Rob Papen's plugins is their versatility. Vecto is no exception to this and allows you to spark your creative flair and experiment with different sound generating methods. As each oscillator has a wide range of control and routing, you can create the signature FM-style synthesis. Using the routing options, you can send any number of oscillators to a modulated oscillator and control this using the Volume Control routing to one of the Free Envelopes inside Vecto. Here, you can create the signature metallic, percussive sound that FM synths are known for, opening new tonal horizons for you to experiment with.
