Tech 21 was founded in 1989 by Andrew Barta when he introduced his revolutionary SansAmp pedal technology to the world. The devices allowed recording direct into a mixing desk without the need for an amplifier, using analog tubes in the pedals to emulate the sounds of different amps.

Tech 21 led the way for modern digital amp modelling technology, however in order to retain the highest possible quality, the company has continued to use only analog technology in all its amplifiers and pedals for both electric guitar and bass.
